Carburizing is the thermochemical treatment that consist of introducing carbon onto the steel surface through the mechanism of atomic diffusion, with the aim of increasing the surface hardness of the material, after being suitably tempered. When iron or steel is rapidly quenched, the higher carbon content on the outer surface becomes hard through the transformation of ausentite to martensite, while the core remains soft and tough as a ferritic and / or pearlite microstructure, or be quite tenacious.
